Finished version of the Memoid du Lune concept art wip I posted last week ago. <3 Cross posted from dA.
These are some of the openings to a location called the Crystalite Caverns, an underground maze of icy tunnels that, yes you guessed it, are full of crystals. The crystals closer to the entrances however (like these ones) are foggier and closer in appearance to stones.

Do you have any tips or advice for those like me who are starting to get serious about improving on their backgrounds. Lately I noticed you've been taking the utmost care in your backgrounds and details and I was wondering what kind of steps you take when starting and working on them. ;u; Thanks.
I’ve very much in the progress of learning more about painting backgrounds myself, but I’m sure I can give a few tips from what I’ve discovered and messed up on myself so far.
Tips
My biggest tip would be not to finish drawing the character and try to add a background, but to work on them together at the same time. If you try to do the character first the colours will usually not match the colours/lighting from the background…and personally I tend to lose interest once I’ve finished something enough.
Try to have lots of interesting details in the background, besides the characters. They’ll make the picture more impressive and it so much more fun to draw.
Remember your light sources. I find it useful to draw little suns or arrows from where the sources of light/glowing things are in the picture before I start adding shading and highlights.
Steps
I usually start by setting down a medium darkness colour for the sky/whatever is in the distance, then I block in the shapes of all the main content that’s going to be in the illustration. (Characters, trees, mountains, flying pigs ect) I try to keep this step on as many layers as I can so I can adjust colours later and I don’t have to repaint over things.
After I’m happy with the colours I’ll merge all the layers for the background, but keep the character separate. Then I’ll finish them both separately and only at the very end will I merge layers together.
I hope that helps, I’m so bad at explaining things ;u; I’ll try to make a mini walkthrough with the next piece of MeLu concept art I do, since they’re fairly background heavy. <3

Part One and Part Two. It seems I was a very wordy, so I actually ended up getting my interview split up and posted in two parts!
The interviewer was very sweet, and patient with me through taking a long time to be wordy and losing an email, and she even mentioned Memoir du Lune in her little blurb about me at the top of the interview, which was a really nice surprise because I never even mentioned it to her! I thought the pictures she chose to use were a bit of a funny selection though, the part one header I did last month and for part two was something I drew last year and they’re both of Lua so my style looks terribly inconsistent. ;uu;

Reposting from our MeLu blog because I looove this *__* The one without wings is my newest character Reën, I hadn’t finished his design when Wispy commissioned it though so the artist kinda improvised his tattoos and he didn’t get a shirt.
I’m working on a fullbody ref thing for him, so you’ll learn more about him then!
I decided to make a Lua shimeji, I’ve finished five frames so far and I still have to get rid of all the white spots. Dx I didn’t think they would be a problem since the images were png, but I guess the program treats them like a gif animation and doesn’t allow semi-transparent pixels. He also levitates a little when he walks. <:3

Some sort of Lua-battlestance, though Wispy says it looks more like a ‘Whoa keep your pants on there.’ If he were about to get involved in a fight he’d probably be hiding behind a tree or something.
